Back to School on the Nagorno-Karabakh front line
Thousands of civilians were forced from their homes when a new war broke out between Armenia and Azerbaijan in late 2020 over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. Following a Russian brokered peace deal which ended the intense fighting, many displaced ethnic Armenians returned to their villages, some of which now sit directly next to newly drawn up lines of separation. This film visits two schools which were the last to re-open inside the remaining Armenian controlled territory. Despite their proximity to military positions, teachers, caretakers and librarians still dealing with the trauma of war have gone back to work and are trying to rebuild their lives and the lives of their pupils at Karabakh's frontline schools.
